Ride the Karoo

A Three-Day Mountain Bike Adventure

Nestled in the heart of the Karoo, Ride the Karoo takes place on the Dwarsvlei farm south of Middelburg. The mountain bike event is a 3-day stage race that combines authentic Karoo hospitality with rugged, untouched riding routes across wide-open landscapes.

On day one, we enjoyed a unique sunset ride, with the sky ablaze in orange and red, creating a stunning backdrop. Navigating the single tracks as darkness settled in truly tested our skills and adaptability, making for a memorable start to the event.

Day two brought a mix of twin jeep tracks and rocky single trails, pushing everyone’s endurance to the limit, especially during the relentless climbs.

The third day presented a particularly tough route, with mud from the previous evening’s rain making the trails tricky. However, the long, winding switchback descent down the mountainside back to camp was exhilarating and brought a genuine sense of reward for our efforts.

Throughout all three days, the waterpoints were a highlight—stocked with hearty soup, rooster brood (a traditional Karoo bread grilled over open coals), sweet koeksisters, and other local delicacies.

At the finish, every participant received a unique, handmade medal fashioned as a miniature windmill—an iconic symbol of the region.

Off the bike, the camaraderie within the camp was just as memorable. Sharing meals and laughs over farm activities brought everyone together. It felt like a real sense of belonging—like we were all part of a family united by a love for cycling and adventure.

Numerous members of RCC joined the event, and their enthusiasm added to the overall enjoyment.

Ride the Karoo offered three days packed with cycling challenges, regional flavours, and wonderful camaraderie—leaving every participant with lasting memories and a taste of real Karoo adventure.
